Courses & Programs of Study
Instruction in bioinformatics at Rice is incorporated into existing courses in the departments of Cell Biology and Biochemistry, Computer Science and Statistics, as well as being the primary focus of several new courses and programs of study:
Selected Courses
- BIOS 533 Bioinformatics & Computational Biology
- An introduction to the emerging field of bioinformatics. A series of lectures, combined with hands-on exercises will introduce the student to various biologically relevant databases, methods to effectively search the databases, and an overall view of the various aspects of computation biology. The topics to be discussed include sequence comparison, structure analysis, phylogenetics, database searching, microarrays and proteomics.
- COMP 450 Algorithmic Robotics
- An introduction to computing object motion in application domains such as robotics, manufacturing, animation, and pharmaceutical drug design. Topics covered include motion planning in known and partially known environments, uncertainty, manipulation, and assembly planning.
- STAT 553 Biostatistics
- An overview of methodologies used in Biostatistics, Statistical, and Bioinformatics.
- STAT 555 Stochastic Models in Genetics
- Future
- STAT 55X Bioinformatics: From Sequence to Expression and Structure
- COMP 483 Algorithmic Biology
